IRL
It was a cold morning; one of the coldest private Macgregor had felt. His hands clutched his rifle tightly. He had been informed earlier that morning that it was time for the first attack. He and the rest of his squad were sitting up in the north of the trenches waiting for the signal for the attack.
"Jesus Christ!" cried the guy to the left of Macgregor "Its bloody freezing!"
Macgregor nudged him in the ribs and whispered "Shut the hell up, Dawson were supposed to keep quiet".
Dawson grunted and began chewing on his dog tags.
"How long we gotta wait like this?" whispered Davis who was to the right of Macgregor
"They said noon, which is..." He checked his watch, "only two minutes away". They sat in silence for the next minutes until Dawson broke the silence "hey Macgregor isn't it time to get ready yet?"
"Ok lads lets get moving" replied Macgregor while he stood to his feet.
The other men stood up and readied there rifles and wait for the signal that would send them to there doom. There was a large siren followed by yelling and gunshots.
"Alright lads, lets go get those Gerri bastards!" screamed Macgregor as his squad let out a mighty roar.
They ran for the ladders that lead to the battlefield. In the distance Macgregor could hear bombs exploding and the painful cries of falling comrades. Macgregor heard a whistling sound over head flowed by a loud THUD as there was a mortar shell exploded to the right of him. The blast threw Macgregor into the wall of the trench as well as the deafening him. The solider raised, shell shocked. He glanced over to the point where the mortar had hit as the sound of war slowly faded back to him. Blood struck bodies and dismembered limbs were scattered over the point were men had been only seconds before. Macgregor felt a sharp pain on his left cheek it had been cut by shrapnel from the mortar shell, pulling a plaster from his medi pack he covered the up the wound.
"Macgregor" whispered a faint voice.
As Macgregor glanced around he spotted Dawson lying under a pile of bodies
"Dawson, Dawson, are you ok?" Macgregor pushed off the bodies of his dead comrades he started to realise that only half of his friend's body was present. The other half was blown off in the blast.
"Hang in there, Dawson, your gonna be alright!"
Dawson was starting to turn pale "Ma...Ma...Macgregor
