Water Reflection

When moving from state to state, most people often compare these two states and either adjust to the new conditions, or reminisce the old norms. Having spent my entire life in Oregon, moving to Texas was a big change even though my sister lives in Texas. People often ask, “What’s the biggest adjustment for you?” or “Are you getting use to the weather?”. When being asked these things I often think of the major differences in my surroundings such as the nature. Because it is so hot in Texas most of the time, most people stay inside and avoid going outside. In Oregon, although the weather can be groggy sometimes, Oregonians like to spend their time outside. This is what I miss the most about Oregon; it’s love for nature.

Back home my family has this back porch where we hang a bird feeder for the hummingbirds. During the day, the hummingbirds give us a visit and say hello as they grab a quick drink. Since it was spring break I actually had the time to be fascinated by these beautiful creatures right in front of my eyes. So I pulled up a chair and just sat there and watched what nature had in store for me. Sometimes there would be three hummingbirds at one bird feeder often scaring each other, or there would be those hummingbirds that thought my red lamp was the feeder. Those were the moments where I got to laugh a little at their cute mistakes.

As Oregon is known for its rain, it happened to start raining one day as I was watching the hummingbirds. Each rain drop starting to hit the dark green canopy below, making a pitter patter right as it splashed down onto the leaves. Surprisingly enough, a hummingbird zipped through the air out of nowhere to our bird feeder in the rain. Because of the wet weather, I could see the intricate patterns on its brown feathers. In my head, I was questioning how these tiny creatures were still flying perfectly through the air without the weight of the water effecting their ability to fly. Good thing the hummingbirds had our patio and the trees canopy to stay dry under.

When listening to rain, there was a faint sound, a humming through the air. It came to my realization that the hummingbird was making this sound and I was quite surprised because my expectation of what a hummingbird sounded like was far different. So I got a little closer without trying to scare it off. There it was again, the humming. In my head I was thinking, how does a creature so fast and small create a loud humming audible to the human ear. At that point, I was actually starting to relax as I was listening to the humming. My breath started to slow, my heart rate didn’t pound against my chest. I had never felt so at ease in a while considering
