Week 2 Individual INDP
After a thorough evaluation of Kudler Fine Foods, and the network that is in use today, it has been decided that there is a high need for upgrade in order to improve speed and efficiency. Major changes in Kudler's network will need to be made in order to bring the company up to current technological standards. The upgrade will keep Kudler abreast of the advances that are available to them, which will help keep the company a viable contender. The investment that is used to bring Kudler current should be able to cover all of the company's short term goals and many of the longer term goals. This will ensure that the software will be relevant for as long as possible before the next upgrade is needed. Listed below are the concerns with the current network that Kudler employees:
* The use of dial-up modems is extremely slow and in-efficient.
* The operating system that is being used on the computer is not up to date, (Windows 98 instead of Windows 7).
* Outdated servers are currently in use at the Del Mar and La Jolla locations.
* Much of the commonly used software is approximately 10 years out of date.
Since all of Kudler's business sites currently use dial-up modems, this should be the first of many things that will need to be upgraded. With a faster connection to the internet, each of the different sites will better be able to keep up with each other, the customer's, and the suppliers that provide the wares they sell. Real-time communications and updates will keep the company abreast of what is going on so they do not fall behind. A good connection speed can help a business a great deal when it comes to being informed. A new Wide Area Network, (WAN), shall be installed at each of Kudler's sites, and each of the sites will have their own Local Area Network, (LAN), as well. The idea behind the installation of the WAN will be to link the networks of each of Kudler's locations, increasing the speed and efficiency of the communications between the locations. In addition to the LAN and WAN upgrades, a Voice-over IP, (VOIP), will be installed and maintained at the headquarters location.
The operating system used to run the computers is the next topic to be addressed. Kudler Fine Foods currently runs Windows 98 on all there systems, and this could put the business at a major disadvantage. With the current OS being so far out of date, Kudler's operating systems have the potential to run slowly among other things. An update to Windows 7, would boost speed and efficiency. The servers that are in use in the Del Mar and La Jolla locations will need to be upgraded so that the real-time updates can be attained, loaded into the system and used to the betterment of Kudler.
