The journey through the future is told by the time traveller and for most of the story, there is very little or no interaction with the population living in that period. It is not until he saves one of the Eloids whom he thinks is a woman from being drowned in front of all the other creatures who don't react and the two of them form a friendship, that we start getting an idea as to what is happening on the planet in 2100. There seem to be little difference between the two sexes of this period. The name of the "tiny figure of white and gold" creature was Weena. She seemed to be an exception among her specie since, as said before, none of the others tried to help her and they didn't show any interest or kindness towards the stranger. The Time Traveller seems to consider this relationship as a "flirtation" in the beginning which progresses then into affection. Their "conversations" are mainly smiles and physical contact, for example when the he carries Weena in his arms.

Weena is described by the time traveller as being childlike; he was surprised to receive any gratitude from the small creature, as the Eloids had never showed that kind of behaviours towards him. Her eagerness and his solitude kept them together most of the time and when he set out on his own, she gave him a feeling of "coming home" even if she was showing her reluctance to let him go by crying and clanging to him. The time Traveller once mentions his desire to tie her down and leave her there, a contrast to the affection he shows her quite often.

The time traveler learns a lot of things concerning those creatures, their ignorance, body weakness etc from his time spent with Weena.

Her ignorance of the existence of fire, for example, shows that the Eloids are primitive. But also the fact that the only fear of these little creatures is the night due to the Morlocks.
