For the two class periods Dr Weizel presented in our class he taught on communication. The first object lesson he offered was a card trick. He presented five or six cards told everyone to select one card and remember it. He then took all the cards away and then returned all but one card. The card everyone picked was missing. Of course he didn’t mention that none of the cards that were originally on the screen were returned. His point was that we need to be observant to all things going on around us in order to see the big picture.
Dr Weizel brought up the point that employers are looking for people that can communicate over people that are technically savy. He presented a lot of information on how to read other people’s body language, how to get other’s to assist you in doing things (particularly subordinates), what type of communicator we are, and how to be an active listener. Perhaps the thing I came away with which I will use the most in my future is how to give a good handshake.
According to Dr. Weizel the correct and effective way to shake hands is as follows. Approach the person smiling; let them know you are happy to meet them. As you say “nice to meet you” raise your eyebrows, this is another sign that you aren’t just going through the motions of another handshake. It is important that when you reach for the other persons hand and grasp it, you meet their webbing with yours. Give a good solid shake, not crushing them, with one down motion and one up motion and let go. This is the handshake of leaders.
