Author Nicholas Carr who wrote the article “Is Google Making Us stupid” is merely reflecting on the pros and cons the technology evolution has made. Technology took a huge turn in history about 50 years ago, where computers were first being used with a typing machine. Now there is a wide variety of option- such as the desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and touchscreen phones. And in all it’s uses, people all over the world has choose to stick to the modern form of research and uses it as their only form of finding information.
Is the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid” Carr states “over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain…” (pg. 313) Based on the statement above, Carr is saying that a daily use of the internet for any typical research, has caused his brain not to function properly when it comes to doing research with books. It has caused him to suffer greatly because his sense of focus with books has been cut short, internet usage has taken his ability of reading for a long period of time. I agree with Nicholas Carr on his statement. Technology evolution has started and changed the lives of people every day. Although I believe technology is a new form of life today in our century, I also believe it has taken a toll on the ability to learn through books and focus to drop.
Being that I was born in the late 1900’s home computers were already invented. My sister who is much older than me quickly began to fall into using any technology program that was and would be invented. As I grew older, I’ve became a technology user on a daily basis as well and never became interested in using a book for no more than 30 minutes. I can agree with Carr, that the changes has affected my reading ability. I believe if technology was not to advance, I would have had time to enjoy books and reading. But schools today also have students using computers more than books as a learning tool.
The difference between my older sister and I, is that although we grew up with this new form of technology, my sister has had the ability to use books as form of entertainment and source for learning. She is able to pick up a book and use it to her advantage for hours whereas myself, can’t find an interest with books, but with computers and the internet I do. I think being exposed first hand to anything and trying to break out and use other resources is much more complicated. Surfing the web for anything- research, personal entertainment, typing, and homework is quicker and more fascinating than spending hours coming up with an answer inside of a 200-300 page book.
