What role might fictional embellishments have on the interpretations of religious doctrines?

Fictional embellishments have played a huge role on religious doctrines such as the Holy Bible. This book is taken literally to many, yet other people stop their acceptance of the stories in the Holy Bible and question it. They question its purpose and what might be the true meaning instead of what society thinks it's conveying.
