Which Sex Attends the Gym More Frequent?
Abstract
When a new year starts, majority of societies resolutions is to lose weight and go to the gym. Most people want a healthy life, some want to just look good. Society has an image of what the ideal male or female should look like in order to be deemed “attractive”. Why do men or woman workout and is it for their own pleasure. If you are a frequent gym member throughout the year, you notice the first month of a new year the gym is packed with people you never seen before. After the first month the gym thins out and which sex is attending the gym more to maintain that body they desire for whatever reason motivates them?
In order to maintain the “perfect body”, we must exercise and eat healthy. Dedication and time goes into this and sacrificing an hour or two less of sleep from your already busy day. Some people would rather wake up early and go to the gym to wake up their body and start their long day. Others prefer going to the gym after their long day to put them to sleep quicker. Who goes to the gym more, males or females? Does time make a difference or is it just will power? Not much research has been done for this topic in health and fitness. Very little observation has been done in researches, more so repetitive research of knowledge that is assumed.
In the month of February, an observation was done to find out which sex attended the gym more frequent and in which time did the subjects attend more. The observation was done Sunday through Friday at 6am and also at 10pm for the entire month of February. The ratio of males to females in the morning was closer than expected, 5:3. But in the evening time it was a complete landslide with a 9:1 ratio. On some evenings there would be no females in the gym and this drew a question, “Why do females attend the gym more during the mornings rather than evenings?”
According to an article by Nicole Honerkamp, the reason men workout more than females is because women are too busy taking care of others to take care of themselves. Their dedication to family presents substantial time and logistical barriers to being physically active. "Caucasian women said they failed to exercise more because they felt guilty for taking time for themselves" (Eyler, 2002). It is believed that Latinas, African Americans and Indian Americans woman felt that societal pressure held them back from being physically active. Almost as if society expected them to care first for others than themselves.
During the holidays and towards then end of the year, you will start seeing more advertisements to join a gym with these great deals. This is a form of motivation for some people to start the New Year with a change in their body. "Daily well-being motivates women to exercise, while “weight loss" and "health" are more motivational for men.” (Wadley, 2012). Heart disease is the number one killer for females in the United States, killing more females than males each year. Working out or jogging releases stress on the body and you are less likely to suffer from a stroke or heart attack from maintaining your health.
