Who Pays the Bill for Internet Shopping?
A. What is the purpose of the essay? To inform? Persuade? Entertain?
The purpose of this essay is to inform the reader of the tax issue concerning Internet shopping. It advises the reader that taxes are not collected on Internet sales the same way they are collected when shopping in a traditional "brick-and-mortar" store, and that shoppers with Internet access have an unfair advantage over shoppers with no access. This essay may also persuade the reader to shop on the Internet and save on taxes and shipping.

The essay is structured as above. The introduction lets the reader know that there is an issue with taxes and internet shopping. The thesis statement: "To improve equity between online and traditional stores and between consumers with and without access to the Internet, tax laws should be reformulated to allow sales taxes to be collected on Internet purchases" is clearly stated at the end of the first paragraph. The body of the essay provides evidence about the issue and transitions smoothly. There are also citations throughout the body of the essay. The conclusion summarizes the issue that the paper is about.
C. Is the essay effective? Why or why not?
The essay is effective because it presents the issue, evidence about the issue, and what has and is being done about the issue. It will also draw a reader to the Internet to shop and take advantage of the opportunity
