Reasons for MBA: Opportunity and Desire
Two critical ingredients for any worthwhile endeavor are opportunity and desire. When that endeavor is the achievement of a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), the depth and extent of these two traits come into play on several levels within the individual. Thus, what leads someone with a tenured business background to pursue a MBA? Simply stated, it is the opportunity and desire at this stage of both my personal and professional lives.
It has always been my desire to secure long-term employment with one organization. I am interested in an institution where I could continue learning new skills, have a wide array of opportunities across departments and help to grow business in the healthcare sector. However, as Orange (2003) notes “individuals must confront the issue of how to define themselves or make plans for the future amid a great deal of uncertainty”. It is because of the ever-changing nature of the business world that it is more important than ever to face that world with a myriad of experiences and enhanced abilities. The downfall, as it seems, in the prospects of long-standing employment within one organization also causes oneself to reflect on how to be best equipped for that future.
The opportunity for this requisite retooling is now. I am living overseas and, because of my spouse’s employment, there is not a real need for me to work. I have the time to learn more about enhancing my management skillfulness and my leadership ability. A MBA education will allow me to do just that. Nevertheless, the available time is not the only compelling factor in my decision. I have the desire to become a better contributor to a firm and to any team I join in the future.
