An old lady is sitting in a lounge in a home for the elderly, totally withdrawn into herself, she has no friends and no relatives to visit her or keep her company. She has given up talking to anyone, she has nothing left to live for. Her past life has faded into a blur, so even her memories are shadows. Every single day is the same as the one before, just like the movie "Groundhog Day." One day something unusual happens that she cannot help noticing. There is a dog in the room, a large golden dog that wags its tail and comes up to nuzzle her hand. She cries, because suddenly she remembers her old dog and how she had to leave it when she came to the home. But the tears are a release, and the dog becomes her friend who comes to see her every week, with the kind lady who owns him. This dog is a therapy dog, which are trained to ease the loneliness of the elderly. Animals are used in modern times to fill many roles, some don't leave the house, others are depended on for life and death situations, but the one constant is the love for the animals by their owners.Ð'¬Ð'¬

The Prison Pet partnership was established in 1981 by Sister Pauline Quinn as a method to use female inmates to train special dogs to assist the disabled. The program is conducted entirely on prison grounds and has showed incredible results for both the animals and the inmates. The opportunity for the inmates to get their animal grooming license, levels one and two, is given to everyone involved in the Prison Partnership. Over 500 dogs have been given to needy disabled men and women, but the most interesting statistic about the program is the success rate of the inmates after they complete their obligation to the state. Every last inmate involved in the program has gone on to be a functioning member of the normal workforce, with a recidivism rate of zero percent.

The United States Navy has a secret weapon up their sleeve that was used during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Marine Mammal Program. The Marine Mammal Program is operated out of Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego, California. It got its start in the late 1950s when the Navy began to study the unique attributes of marine mammals such as the hydrodynamics of the dolphin. By understanding how dolphins move in the water, perhaps the Navy could improve torpedo, ship, and submarine designs. Soon the Navy realized that dolphins would be valuable assistants
