In my opinion, an undergraduate business degree is general and an introduction to business concepts. The majority of the students are fairly young having enrolled the year after graduating from high school. In contrast, a master's degree is advanced and engaging so one could apply the concepts in real business scenarios. The majority of the students that enroll are mature and have work experience in most cases. Personally, for my undergraduate, I played but worked hard to get good grades then after fours years, I was thrown into the complex business world to practice what I had been taught. It was not a smooth transition and definitely not the salary that I had expected.
An MBA will better prepare me for the business environment with all the broad and dynamic concepts that will be covered about management, leadership, resources, business risks, and competitive advantage to take it to the next level. I have enough work experience to know what to take from the courses for maximum utilization while having fun learning new concepts. It is also the best timing for my family, financially, and otherwise. After my undergraduate, I was exhausted with school and definitely did not have the finances to even think about a Masters Degree.
Beginning of this year, I was approached with a business proposal to manage over 3000 clients' bookkeeping and tax fillings but the contract was dismissed because I was neither a CPA nor did I have an MBA. Apart from the academic credential, an MBA will increase my confidence level, knowledge base, and make me more marketable.
I expect the most return on my investment to be applying the concepts that I learn to grow my business, which is taxes and bookkeeping. I not only want to effectively manage the business but to also increase the client base and offer more financial services while improving relationships and retaining clientele.
