Why We Dropped the Atomic Bomb on Japan?

When President Truman was faced with the decision to use the bomb, he insisted that the cost of the project would be justified. As the decision was being made Truman weighed the pros and cons of the situation. President Truman used several reasons to use the atomic bomb, some of them are as follows: the Manhattan Project, to impress the Soviets, to bring the war to it’s close as soon as possible, (with the least amount of deaths), lastly, he wanted to “respond” to the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Many people are familiar with how the Second World War ended, but do they always understand why the White House decided to bomb those two Japanese cities? The president at the start of the Second World War was former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who died, leaving his Vice President, Truman to make the big decision at the close of the war. To fully understand the reasons behind the President’s decision, we must start at the beginning.

A little background: let us start where many of us are familiar with, the start of World War Two or rather the start of the persecution of the Jews. When the Jews began to be persecuted some of the leading scientists of the world at the time were fleeing from all the mistreatment, including Enrico Fermi, and Albert Einstein. Within years, they all ended up in the United States. War in Europe led to the development of new weapons. Physicists in America feared that the Germans were attempting to create a nuclear weapon which resulted in the scientists working towards a controlled “chain reaction,” (which would start a chain reaction of events), the “chain reaction” being now known as the Atomic Bomb. As they worked under their “code” name, the Manhattan Project, the scientists soon discovered the most deadly and destructive weapon of all time.
