The First Sergeant is one of the toughest jobs in the Army and perhaps one of the most important. The job comes with great prestige and enormous personal sacrifice. Leader, mentor, and advisor are just a few words that describe a First Sergeant. As the First Sergeant I would set the example, handle discipline issues, take care of the Soldier and their families, ensure training is conducted to standard so the Soldiers are prepared and trained while ensuring the safety of the Soldiers, counsel, provide direction and motivation and most importantly, be dedicated to the needs of the unit in order for it to be successful. Along with the mentorship that I would provide comes NCO and Soldier development which will improve the morale and build strong camaraderie and Esprit de Corps within the unit.
I understand that my duties are endless and I know I am ready for the challenge. The First Sergeant is the essence of leadership and the standards bearer and I truly believe I have those same traits and values. As the First Sergeant I would be the tip of the sword for the company which would allow me to leave a favorable impression on the younger Soldiers and teach them what right looks like. I would groom the future leaders and get them ready for positions of increased responsibility. While some NCO’s shy away from this position I welcome the challenges with open arms because the Soldiers will bring the best out of me and in return I will bring the best out of them.
I bring 25 year of experience with me and with that I truly know what it means to say “Getting Back to the Basics”. As the First Sergeant I would also be the Soldiers advocate to the Company Commander ensuring he or she stays grounded and doesn’t make poor decisions that would have a negative impact on the Soldiers. I will be the Commanders battle buddy and together we will build a solid professional relationship based upon mutual respect, loyalty and trust.
