The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 under the president at the time Abraham Lincoln. The North known as the Union faced secessionists in eleven Southern states grouped together as the Confederate States of America. It's been 130 years since the Union won the civil war and since then a bunch of reasons as to why the Confederacy lost have been thought of. The Confederacy lost the Civil War for a variety of reasons, the main ones being, a lack of resources/manpower, and because they had no common cause.

A main reason of the confederacy lost was mainly because of their sheer lack of resources and manpower. The “North was able to bring its industry and its manpower to bear in such way that eventually, through sheer numerical and material advantage, it gained and maintained the upper hand” (Pohanka). Because the North had a bigger army and more supplies to maintain that army they overpowered the south, thus causing them to lose.

Another reason for the fall of the Confederacy was that they had no common cause to fight for. The North was fighting for one simple thing the idea of keeping the union together and then later on they added the crusade against slavery, but overall they had a clear cause. The South on the other hand had many different causes to fight for and each depended on what part of the South you were from. For instance, “the Southerners in Arkansas had a very different answer from the Southerners in Georgia or Southerners in Virginia” (Trudeau). If continued to ask what they were fighting for the answers would get more and more confusing. The South's lack of unity and a clear cause led them to lose, because after all how can you win a war if you don't know why you're fighting it.

The North had an abundance of men lining up to enlist and a surplus of resources, not to mention they put up a united front and knew what they wanted. Its no wonder that the Confederacy, which was poorly supplied,
