We chose IT sector because changes happen very frequently in the sector, with new technologies emerging every couple of years. These technological changes often bring about changes to the organizational structure, culture, and strategy. We chose Wipro because it is globally recognized for its innovative approach towards delivering business value and its commitment to sustainability. Wipro has 40+ ‘Centers of Excellence’ (CoE) that create solutions related to specific needs of Industries. Wipro’s ownership is also unique among its competitors with promoters owning more than 70% of the shares. Even though promoters control a significant portion of the shares, the company has evolved continually over the years and maintained a leadership position in the Indian ITES landscape. Wipro is widely regarded for its values and philanthropic activities. Wipro has also undergone a management transition and restructuring after its joint CEO model was scrapped in January 2011. Wipro thus presents a good case for analysis from an organizational effectiveness perspective.

Its IT Services business segment is organized into six strategic business units according to the customer industry it caters to. Wipro's service offerings are aligned with the technology needs of its customers. While the focus is on being a strategic provider of IT Services and the system integrator of choice, it also provides IT Products as a complement to its IT Services offerings. In the India and Middle -East markets, Wipro is a leading provider of system integration services where it provides a full suite of services such as hardware solutions, software licenses, and services. To fulfill system integration projects, Wipro provides IT hardware and software licenses. Wipro Technologies primary identified stakeholders for public policy and advocacy are relevant government ministries and departments, both at the center and the states where they operate. Major interactions are large with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Forests and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Wipro Technologies is also an inherent part of Industry networks and associations such as CII National Environment Committee, CII-ITC Center for Sustainable Development, Nasscom working groups on Gender Diversity, TERI-BCSD forum, CII led Indian Business for Biodiversity Initiative (CIIIBBI), Chapter of the International Union of Conservation Networks (IUCN), Leaders for Nature (LFN) framework of the India, that play a crucial role as catalysts for awareness. Issues such as Climate Change, Energy, Biodiversity, Water, Community Education, Health, etc. require strong civil society involvement as the third pillar along with government policy and business engagement. Carbon Disclosure Project in the area of Climate Change, ACWADAM and BIOME in the area of Water, IUCN (India chapter) and ATREE in the areas of Biodiversity and a network of nearly 30 education partners across the country are some of the initiatives taken by Wipro Technologies for the upliftment of the civil society.
