Over the years I have come to realize that I am fortunate to live in an extraordinary country. Nevertheless, there are certain aspects, such as the lack of security, peace, a place to live or even money to buy food, that make unbridled and unrestrained the majority of the population. This situation is mainly caused by poor leadership skills from our government elected officials and a growing delinquency rate. These selfish groups do not respect nor cooperate, and hamper a better future for my country: the Dominican Republic.
Due to the fact that I am only a teenager and have no vote over my country's decisions, I decided to participate in an activity that I considered would help me better understand the roots of my country's and the rest of the world's social, cultural and ethnic issues. This activity, known by many is the Model United Nations.
Everyone has a leader in his or her soul; we just have to discover it. Mine was hidden under the disgraceful power of insecurity that I portrayed. Luckily, I was able to overcome that fear and accomplish my goal of being accepted and respected equally. That same year, I was chosen to represent the country among the thousands of participants in a Conference on Human Rights at the United Nations Headquarters. After that, more pleasant surprises started to happen in my life. I was chosen to be the President of the Model UN Club in my school and was selected to be one of the founders of the National Youth Leadership Council. Through the Model United Nations I have been able to express my political perspectives on world issues and have developed an immaculate gift for debate.
By discussing topics such as "The security situation in Iraq", "The situation in Sudan", "The Global impact of HIV/AIDS", "The role of the IMF", among others, I have developed a sense of commitment to international peace, human rights and equality.
