Subject: Zara: IT For Fast Fashion- Analysis of existing POS and desirability of upgrading

Recommendation:

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to work with your company. As requested, I have evaluated all options or alternatives to the existing POS in your company. This recommends a course of action that includes the POS terminals and the need for upgrading the current operating system, DOS, to Windows. For Zara to maintain its mission, to provide quick and affordable fashionable items, you will need to upgrade to a modern efficient system which will enable real time data and streamline processes.

With the current system, Zara runs the risk of their DOS supplier dropping them since they are the only customer running on DOS. And since there are no guarantees from the supplier, we must take action before it is too late. The POS terminals and PDAs do not contain information that could be used when one store wants to know if a nearby one had a particular SKU in stock. Store personnel telephone one another to answer this question. An updated system would fix this problem and add more functionality and networking capabilities. With a wireless network in place, it would no longer be necessary to carry floppy disks around the store at the end of each business day to tally up total sales.

As a leader in supply chain, you simply cannot keep running on obsolete technology. Advanced technology will cost the company a lot of money in the short-term but the benefits outweigh the costs in the foreseeable future.

I believe this is the most efficient solution that will boost productivity. Inditex created an extraordinary vertically integrated supply chain that has made it a leader in the industry. It’s not a luxury to understand how modern technology can benefit your company, it’s necessary for success! If you want to continue meeting the company’s competitive advantage and improve the growth of Zara, we must take action before it’s too late.
