Microsoft and Others: Developing Software Products for How Companies Do Business
1. A common phrase among IT professionals is “The world views its data through Windows.” Why does Microsoft dominate the desktop and networked software market? Visit its website at www.microsoft.com, and review its broad range of software products and services to help with your answer.
Since Microsoft started its business catering to a large number of computer users, they did not stop innovating their products. Their operating systems are upgrading according to the needs of the people and even according to the trend in technology. Microsoft did not stop in just catering to home users or personal users of computer that needs their software and operating systems. They had started venturing to a different industry in which they think could be a good market also for their products. Developing software products that could help minimize the operating process in the certain industry has been their newest addition to their wide array of products. Since then Microsoft started to partners with other companies to help them in their marketing. They even started expanding their market by creating and selling software products that could help the manufacturing and retailing industries in their operation. Because of the strategy and plans of the Microsoft company in expanding their market they have been regarded to as the top company when it comes to software products. Microsoft do not close their door in innovating what they already have now in order to target and cater more users and industries.
2. How successful will Microsoft be in competing with software vendors who specialize in specific market applications like health care, retail, and other specialty services? Why?
Microsoft has been successful in competing with other software vendors that has the same product as their because of its name. Another reason is that the company allied with different vendors in order to cater and properly address the needs of the customers. The strategy done by Microsoft is far different from other software vendors in a way that they could manipulate their product and even their market. Microsoft hires people who has the knowledge and experience in an industry that they want to cater. In such way, they could create software products that are dependable and can make a good use because it addresses the needs of that industry. Because of Microsoft’s different strategy’s, they can easily penetrate a new industry. Also because of the established name of the company, being one of the best software seller, they can easily sell their products. The best way to overcome competitors is to be the first one to sell products that already has everything and can already address to the needs of the industry.
3. Do you agree with Microsoft’s strategy to develop industry-specific partners to capitalize on opportunities in both large and small business sectors? Is there an advantage or a disadvantage to being one of Microsoft’s partners in this type of relationship? Explain.
The strategy of the Microsoft in teaming up with industry-specific partner is a good strategy. Since the expertise and knowledge of these people in various industries help Microsoft in developing and upgrading their software products, it also helps them penetrate such industry and even gain popularity and position. Teaming up or partnering with a specific industry can help Microsoft in widening their market. Because of the strategy more business, both large and small can improve their current processes. Microsoft not just capitalize on teaming up with these industry specific partners but they had also capitalize on the popularity they gain. Teaming up with Microsoft, can help a firm in widening their market. Also it can help a company in introducing and selling their own type of product. The only disadvantage that may seem to arise in these type of partnership is that in the future Microsoft will be dominating the partner company.

1. What are the business benefits to Amazon and eBay of opening up some of their databases to developers and entrepreneurs? Do you agree with the strategy? Why or Why not?
When Amazon and ebay opens its doors to the public it has started gaining more profit that they already had. The strategy that they uses – exposing their products to larger number of clients- somewhat open doors for them to minimize cost of developing products to sell because those people who gains access to their sites and their products is the one creating the products for them. Being an online portal for sellers and retailers, it has created numerous opportunities for developers and entrepreneurs to widen their market. The strategy of the companies are so good that it helps them attract more customers. Opening its doors to a wide variety of retailers is a good strategy. Many retailers and entrepreneurs access their sites to sell their own products and both of them share in the profit. What Amazon and eBay did is both a win-win solution between their company the developers and entrepreneurs.
