Discussion Question 1

Tone is very important when communicating online. How will your tone, or writing style, change based on the different types of people you will be communicating with online? Consider family/friends, classmates, and instructors in your response.

I don't think that anything will change on my behalf in the terms of tone and/or writing style. I know the appropriate tone to use with friends and family and I know the tone needed when dealing with classmates and instructors.

When communicating with friends and family it is appropriate to use a variation of fun fonts and emoticons. Having fun with colors and font sizes also comes into play when communicating with family and friends as opposed to classmates and instructors.

When communicating with classmates and instructors it's important to remember that "the Online classroom is a collaborative learning environment" which makes being "professional and direct" a top priority for effective communication and tone.

For example, I would never say to a classmate or instructor "EMAIL ME BACK ASAP" whereas I would be more than comfortable doing so to a friend or a family member. It is important to follow "netiquette" in the online environment just as much as it's important to use proper etiquette in a face to face environment.
