Animal Rights/Testing

There has been much controversy about using animals in experiments for decades. People converse over different alternatives for animal testing and the inhumane way scientists treat these animals in experiments. This topic causes so much controversy because there are ethical issues to consider such as the treatment of the animals and the reasoning behind testing on these animals if its for a greater cause or not. As of now , I am for animal testing for many beneficial reasons that come out of animal testing. Although in some cases animals maybe abused, there have been so many discoveries with medicine with testing these drugs on animals. Until we find a better way of testing drugs I believe animal testing is ethical.

Some arguments against this animal testing as I stated above is that some of these animals are abused. Such as in the article Fuzzy Little Test Tubes by Lawrence Osborne. In this article the author says that " This loophole, critics say, has made it possible for scientists to manipulate mice in vast numbers, cruelly or otherwise." This quote found in the article is talking about the Animal Welfare Act that was established to protect the rights of animals in labs. The other arguments are that scientists can use alternatives such as a new technology discovery called "animal on a chip". This new device is a silicon or plastic chip with compartments containing cells of certain organs. The flow of the fluids in the compartments that happen between the chambers make the system more realistically represent an animal. The chip's developer says that " Besides offering a new testing regime intermediate between cell cultures and intact organisms, animal on a chip tests could provide data that render those other categories of testing more precise and effective." Extreme animal activists such as PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, are dedicated to establish and protect the rights for all animals. The
