Behavior and Communication Paper: Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is a religious/charitable organization, part of a worldwide Christian church, probably better known today for its social work than its evangelistic work. The Salvation Army provides a range of services to support families, young people and children. One particular area of focus is the relationship that families have with their elderly generations. To support this, the Salvation Army offers a range of resources to inform families on how to break down the barriers to communication and support their elderly generations as they become vulnerable. In order to help people all around the world and have the organization going, they must communicate within the organization. The Salvation Army has Expatriates, called reinforcement officers, are usually representatives of the Western culture, and certainly support the organization in their efforts to comply with the structures, procedures, and administrative, and operational aspects within the organization. Higher-ranking national officers and staff are usually exposed to training courses held overseas (ICO, university- degree courses, other administrative courses). In this way, The Salvation Army ensures that Papua New Guinean officers are able to understand the Western worldview, and organizational procedures, and apply it within their position.
Therefore, it is very difficult at times when reaching out to another branch can sometimes mean- contacting someone on the other side of the world; like Los Angeles or anywhere in the U.S. for example.
- Communication barrier would be language
- System down due to bad weather
- Different time zones
- Technical problems
Any of these can happen on a day to day basis and affect both the internal and external communications. Communication is generally easier over shorter distances as more communication channels are available and less technology is required.
Although modern technology often serves to reduce the impact of physical barriers, the advantages and disadvantages of each communication channel should be understood so that an appropriate channel can be used to overcome the physical barriers. Again there’s not much that can be done to help fix this. This can link to several other communication barriers, for example; technical barrier, if you are unable to connect to the receiver it could be a technical fault.
