A hero can be easily described as someone with strength, courage, and a sense of selflessness; however describing someone as a hero is not as easy. In many ways, Beowulf is like that of Captain America, Joe Andruzzi, and those in Ruth Carter’s blog. Such heroes can be exemplified through individuals always portrayed as heroes like Captain America, or even through everyday people and ordinary school teachers. . He possesses incredible strength much like Captain America, courageous like Joe Andruzzi and his brothers, and is also selfless like those in Ruth Carter’s blogs.
Like Captain America, Beowulf uses his strength to help others. The same way Captain America goes to the aid of anyone as shown in the line, ”Captain America will help anyone a friend or a stranger.” Captain America will do anything to save other people’s lives and puts others before him. Beowulf seeks out Horthgar’s kingdom when he learns about Grendel’s destruction. “…proclaiming that he go to that famous king, would sail across the sea to Hrothgar, now hen help was needed.” Beowulf went to this new kingdom to save the people from Grendel’s terror.
Joe Andruzzi and his brothers showed bravery during their country’s devastating crisis in the falling of the Twin towers on September 11th. Although he denied it, Joe was a hero by showing bravery in defending people in need and the helpless much like Beowulf. Joe stepped into action when help was needed. “I turned and saw three young women carrying somebody on their back..I ran over….and walked her down t he block to an ambulance” Beowulf also shows bravery when he came to thi new kingdowm to save the people from Grendal’s destruction.
Beowulf can also be compared to one of the heroes acknowledged by Ruth Carter, Liviu Librescu, in the respect of how the both of them are selfless. Mr. Librescu, a teacher, used his body as a human shield in order to protect his students, his selfless decision was described as, “an act which enabled most of this students to escape through the windows.” When Beowulf faced the dragon, he was well aware of the consequenes. He knew he could almost die; but he still goes through with it because that is what true courage is. “Then he said farewell to his followers, each in his turn, for the last time..” He knew what was coming but he went through it because he knows it will save the people of his kingdom.
