One of the biggest recalls in US and in automotive history occurred earlier this year causing the deaths of at least 8 people and injuring at least 100 more. Takata is the largest supplier of automotive airbags and it is a safety sytems are supposed to save your life (DeBord, M. 2015, May 23). More than ten care manufactures were affected as Takata the fourth-largest airbag maker in the world, had millions of defected airbags. According to the New York Times, It has four production facilities in the world and they produce nearly 20% of the auto industry's airbags. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after several complaints were filed against Japanese airbag manufacture Takata with in regards to faulty airbags, they announced that Takata would declare those 33.8 million vehicles defective because they are equipped with could deploy explosively, injuring or even killing car occupants.
Airbags are thought to be a great safety feature on automobiles, but in this particular case they caused many injuries and deaths in all kinds of accidents. Airbags should be safer and inspected more in dept. Everyone should feel safe in their vehicle; vehicles should also have an easy access to turn off airbags, as maybe some of these accidents could have been avoided if the company didn’t take their time admitting fault. The production year on these vehicles was newer, so one would only think that by 2002 these cars would not have these problems. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Highway Loss Data Institute (Insurance Institute) web page, “Over 107 million (52%) of the over 207 million cars and light trucks on U.S. roads have driver airbags. Over 81 million (39.4%) of these also have passenger airbags. Another one million new vehicles with airbags are being sold each month.” These numbers show that about a fourth of all the vehicle’s that have airbags, have this manufacture issue.
