Global warming is a modern epidemic. Every country seems to have their own "epidemic", but global warming is shared by everyone across the globe. It is evident that it is here and causing serious damage to Earth as we know it. For example, the weather is changing dramatically, there are more hurricanes, and the ice caps are melting and an increasing rate.
Every country is doing their part in trying to control global warming. In America, we are looking to use alternative fuel that lowers emission and makes us less dependent on gas or oil. In Europe, it is much more of a problem than here in America. In 1997, the United Nations signed a treaty called the Kyoto Global Climate Change Treaty was signed. The Kyoto treaty basically mandated a reduction on greenhouse gases. The Kyoto Protocol is within 106 countries or more.
The European Union produces about 22 percent of the worlds greenhouse gases. So, it is highly necessary that they comply and put forth and effort to help control global warming. In January, the European Commission decided it was going to reduce GHG emissions by 20 percent by 2020.
In 2002, the EU created an emissions trading system for various industries like, cement, steel, energy, glass, etc. These industries are fined of they don't meet their obligations on emissions, which is a really good incentive for the company's to stay on track.
Overall, every nation is doing their part, but the European Union is trying really hard to do theirs. They make up for a large portion of the world so it is imperative that they help fight against global warming and reduce greenhouse gases.
