Brave New World

"He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." Dr. Johnson. In Brave New World there is a drug called soma, used to make you feel better. "Just a gram and you won't give a damn." Was a slogan for Soma designed by Helmholtz. Just like the modern narcotics of today, when ever you felt worried or troubled all you need was a little pick me up, for some its marijuana, others Cocaine, some even use a diabolic substance called ether. "There is nothing more helpless than a man in the midst of an ether binge" Hunter S. Thompson. In Brave New World soma was used to cure all your mental problems just like any other drug, and it left you addicted to it. It made you feel good, but at what cost? The cost was not learning, not questioning, not loving. Soma sucked away your emotions and left you dry. Left you without fear, pain, love hate, all the emotions that made being human so magnificent.

Cigarettes are considered to be the leading drugs that cause death, and Soma is exactly the same as a cigarette. Cigarettes take years off your life and so does soma. In times of grief, or when you feel worried or troubled many people smoke a cigarette. In Brave New World they take soma when they feel worried troubled, or a feeling they have never felt. Cigarettes are harmful because they are addicting, and once you smoke them it is hard to quit. Soma you take from when you are a child and you can't stop taking it. Soma and cigarettes are quite similar, however, cigarettes make you look dirty, make you smell gross, and they make you look older. Soma on the other hand actually makes you look younger.

Almost all drugs make you unable to learn as well as you could off the drug. A lot of the time drugs make you... well dumb as hell. Soma does the same thing, but for a reason. Soma takes away almost all your ability to learn, and makes you
