Johann Pachelbel was baptized in Nuremberg, Germany September 1, 1653. Pachelbel moved to Vienna in 1671 where he became the deputy organist at the Imperial Chapel (http://jan.ucc.nau.edu). In 1678 Pachelbel moved to Erfurt, where he taught Johann Christoph Bach, the older brother of Johann Sebastian Bach. In 1690 Pachelbel became court organist at Stuggart. Pachelbel’s first wife, Barbara Gabler, and son died in the plague of 1683 (http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com). Pachelbel married his second wife, Judith Drommer in August of 1684. Pachelbel had seven children with this marriage. Two of his children became musicians, one an instrument maker, and one a painter (ibid). Pachelbel died in Nuremburg, March 9, 1706 at 53 years old.
Pachelbel is credited with developing the “cantus firmus” chorale (www.byu.edu). This consists of the chorale melody in long notes, one phrase at a time, each phrase preceded by fore imitation in the accompanying voices.
The piece of music that Pachelbel wrote that I have chosen, is Canon in D Major. This piece was written around 1680
(http: //dialspace.dial.pipex.com). In Pachelbel’s era, he was better known for his scared church pieces. Canon in D became more popular in the 20th century that it ever was in the baroque period. Canon in D has been used in major films such as Father of the Bride and Ordinary People, television ads for Threshers Wines, Pure New Wool, British Gas, various other songs and it was played at Princess Diane’s funeral (ibid).
