Mid-term in-class report writing: Evaluation
On CONTENT
A. Introduction
1. The story:
- Background: DO NOT give the history of Jamie Oliver UK; give the background of the HK expansion instead, e.g. the number of outlets in the world/Asia/HK; company vision
- WHO ARE YOU? → relevant to Jamie Oliver UK, e.g. Jamie’s Kitchen HK expansion team, operations team, business expansion team
- YOUR TASK: Opening a branch in HK smoothly: it has not been ready yet but will be opened in 3 months → PRE-OPENING arrangement!
2. Outline of the report: can be short, but cannot be missed!
3. 1-line summary of your advice and conclusion, e.g. It is hoped that …
B. Discussion
1. Findings:
a. Basic details stated in the questions, which are the results of the site visit, HAVE TO BE included here!!!
- The renovation of the restaurant is not yet complete, the kitchen equipment is not in place and the interior of the restaurant has many areas that need further work.
- There are many restaurants serving different cuisine in the area
- The marble top for the bar, which has been especially imported from Italy, arrived broken and cannot be used.
- (Optional); can be used as a suggestion instead) Organize an official opening and need to invite the guests and decide on the format.
b. (Optional) Extra details based on the basic details:
- Elaboration on the above points, e.g. types of restaurants nearby; exact types of missing kitchen equipment; which areas need further work
- Giving more proofs; e.g. Openrice data the number of restaurants nearby; marketing strategies adopted by successful restaurants
- (Optional) Extra details: e.g. Customers come with cars but there is not parking lot and the street is narrow; Spending power of diners in Soho is high.
2. Problems:
- PLEASE DO NOT REPEAT “FINDINGS”! (some of you LITERALLY REPEATED!)
- Valid problem suggested by your classmates: delay in opening*, dangerous, poor appearance, not following the decoration theme of Jamie’s Kitchen worldwide, costing more if the restaurant cannot be opened on time; hard to attract customers because of similar restaurants#
(*: but the case also states that “you believe it will be completed on time.” → give more explanation to avoid contradiction)
(#: “hard to attract customers because of different restaurants”: explanation needed)
- Pre-mature problems should not be mentioned, e.g. long queue outside restaurants but the air is polluted; customers may not like Tiramisu…[pic 1]
d. Suggestion: MAY start with a SHORT noun phrase& summarising the fact concerned and then give a description of the problem
(&: short noun phrase only; DO NOT REPEAT the WHOLE FACT again!)

3. Recommendations:
~ SPECIFICITY~~~~ MATTERS~
a. ALL problems induced by the BASIC DETAILS have to be solved WITH SPECIFIC INFO!
- Decoration needs further work: how many extra workers? How many extra hours needed?
- Broken marble top: replacing with WHAT exactly? From where? When can it arrive?
(“to ensure that it arrives intact and on time”: how can you ENSURE it? What can you do exactly? SAY IT!)
- Promote it… HOW exactly? (the opening ceremony can be used as a strategy here)
- Guests for the opening ceremony: WHO and WHY?; other tips to attract people to notice you
b. Extra problems owing to extra details given: should be addressed also
C. Conclusion
1. Reaction (OPTIONAL): Refer to your “recommendations” and see if they will induce other issues
2. Follow-up action (Numbering issue: if you only include “Follow-up action” in C, you should not number it but use a bullet instead [pic 3]
