CBS loves Youtube or it can be said that CBS loves technology. This article talks about how CBS is uploading videos on Youtube and allows users to do the same and different other ways that CBS gets exposure in the vast expanse of the internet.Youtube, the upstart online - video site which took away almost all the market share of users that view videos online, has millions of users. This is what attracts CBS to Youtube. Viacom and many other companies have filed lawsuits against Youtube for illegally showing copyrighted videos online, but CBS, on the other hand respect Youtube and have an appreciative relationship with them. CBS posts videos from their own shows, trailers, short clips and many others. For CBS, Youtube works. Going by the number of views that Craig Ferguson (a late night talk show host on CBS) gets, I get the feeling that he is the funniest man on late night shows. This was done by CBS to attract more viewers to watch his show and attract more ratings. Even though the CBS homepage gets more hits, the huge database of users in Youtube attracts CBS. CBS is the first media company that has signed to “Clip + Sling” service that enables users to pull a video or clip from live TV and email it to a friend. Ideas like that are leading CBS’s online presence and exposure.
This article clearly states that CBS wants to embrace this technology and take it to the next level. The partnership with Youtube and other sites clearly shows us where the marketing plans of CBS lie, the Internet. CBS has only recently come to the realization of the internet’s potential to help market their many television shows, in particular “viral-videos” just because of the sheer populace of netizens. Marketing in the internet has gone through many levels. 1. Marketing through different sites, by placing ads, banners, etc. 2. Marketing through search engines, like Google, Yahoo and many others and the latest way to do it, 3.Marketing through video sites, by placing trailers or sneak previews of shows in Youtube, Google Video to increase the hype or the curiosity of the people. This has, in a short span of time become a Billion dollar industry, and we can understand this from the growth of Google and Yahoo and 99% of Google’s revenues come from sponsored search results. Marketing through internet has a great advantage.
