My definition: a way to defend your unconscious thoughts from becoming conscious

Summary: Anxiety is a sign that your ego is in jeopardy. In order to combat that, your ego uses defense mechanisms. They work at the unconscious level, make you feel better, and keep away unpleasant feelings, such as those of anxiety. Defense mechanisms are normal. If they get out of hand phobias and obsessions can develop
Connection: Defense mechanisms help combat feelings of anxiety and can help battle feelings of awkwardness. For example, when a teenage guy introduces himself to a girl the girl may feel awkward and begin to laugh or have trouble getting her words out.
