The main characters in the book Cheating Lessons were Mr. Malory, a teacher at Wickham High School, and Bernadette, a clever student in Mr. Malory's class. Mr. Malory and his class were getting ready for the academic quiz bowl. Five out of many students in his class were elected to go to the state championship.
Bernadette only knew Mr. Malory for less than a year. He was her favorite teacher because he very handsome and had a British accent. He had a cool car too Ð'- a Porsche. Bernadette liked him because he gave a lot of wise words or phrases in some books that inspired her. Mr. Mallory used these words and phrases to prepare his classes for the academic bowl. The teacher was teaching really advanced English class with the purpose of having everyone memorize the books.
Mr. Mallory's class took the test that would pick the students going to the bowl. When Bernadette found out the results of the test for entering the bowl, she got suspicious about the scores. The total score was really higher than Bernadette thought they could get. It was ninety-two percent. Mr. Malory convinced his students, including Bernadette, that the results were correct.
The team for academic bowl kept studying really hard because the teacher really wanted to win the state championship. The prize for winning was ten-thousand dollars. The teacher had a weekly meeting about the bowl so they could practice more. As the time came closer to the academic bowl, Bernadette still was not satisfied about the test score. She grew more suspicious.
Bernadette had a chance to go to Mr. Malory's apartment and saw everything about the test and the bowl. She found out that the teacher had simply cheated on the results of the test for her and her team. That is when Bernadette lost her heart and started to hate Mr. Malory. She would not tell anyone except her best friend Nadine, and her mother. She did not tell the others on the team
