In the quote by Moynihan, “Congressmen vote for everyone more readily than they vote for any one.” the author uses this quote to emphasize the cowardice of many congressmen in their voting while they claim that they are doing so fairly and equally towards all. It’s meant to suggest that it’s a simple task, in their positions, to state that they are voting and considering parties equally by being general and vague about their opinions, instead of having solid ones and specifics in their reasoning. For the sake of those who are opposed to racial equality, it’s easier for them to regard the black community’s specific problems by generalizing them as problems across the nation. In relation to the quote, “As for that white anger to which Obama was giving voice, it stemmed from unfair accusations of white privilege against those who feel that whatever they have in life, ‘they’ve built it from scratch.’” The author includes this specific opinion for us to illustrate how many whites are ignorant and oblivious to their privilege, proving so by stating that they all believe that their accomplishments are truly done from the ground up, while not considering that many minorities start even lower than themselves. It also gives a brief explanation on what exactly white anger is, and how they’re quick to defend themselves while not keeping an open mind about the other races, and failing to compare themselves in areas that truly matter, making them blind to their privilege and opportunity.

The author’s interpretation of Obama’s plea, “All he
