All animals have ways to communicate. A dog barks to let the owner know what is happening. If the dog growls, it usually means that it is in attack mode, and is trying to intimidate. If it whimpers, it means that it wants something, or that it is unhappy, but if it is wagging its tail and barking, it usually means that they are happy, and ready to play. Humans are social animals who communicate verbally. Although all cultures use different languages and gestures to communicate, we all have the same goal, and that is to get the listener to understand what we are saying. When it comes to the bonds we have with friends, family members, and romantic partners, the key to a healthy relationship is communication. The people who understand, and connect with us the most are usually the people that we select as our friends.

Communication skills begin in the home. The first people you learn to communicate with are the people in your family, and in your house. If a person comes from an expressive house, when they begin to form relationships, they will have no trouble expressing love, anger, frustration, and appreciation to the companion. People often fall on hard times in relationships because of lack of communication.

Lack of communication can lead to many unhealthy relationships. Perhaps you have ever played the game telephone? The game is played by a group of people. The first person starts of by whispering a statement into their neighbor's ear. The statement is the then whispered from person to person until it comes to the last person of the group. At that point the remaining person says the statement out loud to see if the message was passed correctly. Usually along the line of people it was passed to, the original message gets lost and by the time the last person gets the message, all the truth has been deleted resulting in gossip. The purpose of the game is to show how gossip begins. Gossip is the root to many arguments that start, particularly amongst friends. However, if you have a tight communication bond with your companion, then you can know what to believe, and what is false.

According to an article in the New York Times, the biggest emotion people have trouble expressing is anger. People argue their issues in an improper manner that involves screaming or yelling. The couple argues and makes up, never addressing the problem and coming to a proper solution. The problem continues to grow, and so
