COMPLICATED SHADOWS

I will leave judgments whether this story is good or bad to you, the reader. However, this little tale holds a special place in my heart. It is the first story I ever published. It appeared on the DemonMinds webzine in July of 2003.
It was inspired by a seemingly ordinary night of drinking with friends. A mysterious light in a house across the street got my mind running. When I caught up with it, I had a simple question I needed answered. What if? What if that light, probably from an alarm clock or VCR, was something much more sinister? What if we, the sidewalk philosophers sipping on whiskey and solving the world's problems, ventured forth to investigate? Would we find the source? Would we survive to tell?
I returned home that night and started work on Complicated Shadows. The version you read is slightly different than the original, completed first draft, but it still retains the same feel I was striving for when I wrote that first line: "What the hell is that red light?" Maybe one day I will include the original draft here.
Like my narrator, I did not know what that light was then. We both came to find out. I also came to realize I needed to focus on my writing and pursue my dream of writing novels.
I hope you enjoy reading Complicated Shadows. I know I enjoyed writing it.
