Computer Technician
In this day and age computers are found everywhere. You find them
in stores, restaurants, schools, and homes. It is hard to go anywhere without seeing a computer. Computers are used by almost everyone in America for something. Along with computers comes computer problems whether it be hardware problems, software problems or the “ Oh no, Our network just crashed!” problems. Whatever the problem is someone needs to fix it. This is where computer technicians come in.
Computer technicians have one of the fastest growing careers around. The US Department of Labor reports that employment is expected to increase eighteen percent from 2006 to 2016 which is faster than the average for all occupations. Over 155,000 jobs will be added in the next decade. (bls.gov)
There are several specialists jobs that fall under the title computer technician. Such jobs are Computer Support Specialist, Network and Systems Specialist, Graphic Designer, Computer Programmer, and Webmaster.(Ruhl, 2000) There are also different requirements for each Specialization. For instance a computer support specialist needs certain certifications but not any degrees. Whereas a Webmaster typically needs to have a Masters degree or higher, plus certain certifications. No matter which specialist job you choose most computer technicians have desirable job conditions. The majority of technicians only work about forty hours a week. They work in well lit places that are usually air conditioned. They typically do their work in comfortable offices or computer laboratories. (Henderson, 1999)
There are some drawbacks to having the job of a computer technician. One of the drawbacks are eyestrain. Technicians usually suffer from eyestrain due to the lights of the computer screen. Another disadvantages of the job would be hand and wrist strain. Carpal Tunnel is a more severe case of hand and wrist pain due to using a computer often. Technicians have also reported having back discomfort. (bls.gov)
Though I am not quite sure which specialist job I want for the future I am positive that the field of Computer Technician is the one for me. I like the idea of working inside and not doing major labor. Also computers have always intrigued me so it is only normal for me to want to pursue a career that deals with them.
