INTRODUCTION

Travel and tourism is highly volatile industry which is dependent on the leisure traveler. The industry is exposed to economic, political and health undulations. The report covers current issues in the travel and tourism industry as well as environmental and economic issues associated with it. Marriott is a public sector company of Britain in travel and tourism industry. The report involves analyses of the impact of current issues on Rome, London and Marriott International.  The report represents theoretical and empirical data along with analysis of research findings (Hudson, 2011).

Task 1

1.1 Current issues in the travel and tourism sector

Travel and tourism industry is facing many issues which are ultimately bringing changes in it Travel and tourism sector has managed to stay moderately flexible for current year regardless of the uncertain global economic outlook. This has been characterized by macroeconomic tensions, high unemployment and delicate global economic growth. But travel and tourism sector is benefitted from the long-lasting globalization process. The euro zone economy is considered to have shrunk by 0.4% in 2012 and is predicted to contract again in 2013 which influences the customer confidence (Dale and Robinson, 2001). There would be a major shift in monetary or fiscal policy in Britain as a result of change in current exchange rates.  The change in exchange rates is a consequence of economic happenings outside of Britain. The price of oil remained over $110 per barrel with a number of geopolitical risks leading to volatility in price levels potentially (Seaton, 2000).

One of the most amazing places in Europe is Rome and millions of tourists visit this place every year. Due to increase in tourism city is facing issues which are indirectly affecting the local community, environment, etc. Some of the advancements and the issues are-

Rise in Globalization- Globalization is the well known term in this era and it has affected this tourism industry in both the negative and the positive manner (Cooper and Hall, 2012). Due to it city is attracting many tourist all around the year and it has helped the government generate revenues. Also because of the globalization, income level of the people is rising day by day and they have been able to develop themselves. But on the other side, this globalization has increase the number of tourists in the city and it affected the culture of the Rome very badly. Many local children and adopting bad habits like smoking, drinking, gambling and all these things are exploiting the communities (Robson, 2013).

.

Terrorism- It is also one of the biggest issues that has arisen in the in the travel and the tourism industry. Terrorists take the advantage of this industry and enter the cities as tourists to fulfill their evil mission. Rome has also suffered from this issue as many of the embassies in Rome were blasted by the terrorists and many people lost their lives (Eccles and Costa, 2000). These activities have reduced the attraction of the city in the eyes of other countries.

Liberalization- Italy government has very strict policies regarding Visa for the tourists and because of that many tourists don’t prefer to come to this city because they will have to follow many rules and regulations. All these things are reducing the scope of tourism in the city.

Environment- Environment of the city has also been affected because of the increase in tourists. Tourists don’t care about the place and they throw their garbage on the roads, in the parks, etc which is destroying the eternal beauty of this place and giving opportunity for many diseases to arise. Some of the people also harm the national monuments by making drawings on them and this has become the topic of great discussion among the government officials (Amoah and Baum, 2001).

Changing Consumer needs- Needs and the demands of the consumers changes every day and it has forced many organizations in the city to adapt themselves according to these changes (Thomas, 2000). All the companies are trying to make different packages so that they can attract various tourists.

1.2 Analyses of different current issues in respective industry using appropriate methods and resources

The analysis of current issues in Italy would recommend the factors on which emphasis can be laid down for improvement. The change in exchange rates would simultaneously affect the number of visitors in the country and result in decline of income to company (Anderson, 2013). The shrunk in euro zone economy is persuading customer confidence. Hence customers or visitors would further reduce. The rise in oil prices also affects the fund availability of company and also the income of customers to spend. The high taxes paid by company for various services would further persuade company resources. The wireless communication seems to be helpful to Italy in attracting customers but would unfortunately decrease the number of customers as such communication reduces need for business trips (Balmer, 2013).  The country is required to focus on safety and security issues and all these factors will help the country to present them as a safe city. Culture of the country is getting worse day by day and many children are adopting bad habits so it very important for the government of the country to take some strict action to abolish these practices. Many other things that country official can encourage the companies to do is the standardization of hotel facilities so that traveler forgets in what country the hotel is situated. Political restrictions can be one of the issue which influences tourism industry. The political conditions in the country are very unfavorable because of the constant change in the policies and this affecting the tourism a lot (Murphy, 2013).
