Corporate citizenship not only deals the relationships between corporations and their staffs members; it also speaks to the relationship between companies and all of their shareholders/stakeholders. Firms that represent good corporate citizenship are expected to obey the law, be profitable, engage in ethical behavior, and give back through charity (Carroll, n.d.) PETsMART® ‘s goal to provide Total Lifetime Care to every pet and their every parent at all times, while are constantly searching for different ways to decrease environmental impact.
PETsMART® is strongly committed to improving and enriching the lives of all their stakeholders. At the end of 2013, Washington County, Maryland partnered with PETsMART® made 70 pet waste bag stations available at several pet friendly parks across the county (Washington County Government, 2015, p. 1). This partnership is to aid in protecting County waterways by decreasing pet waste amount that goes into the Conococheague Creek and Antietam Creek Watershed (Washington County Government, 2015, p. 1).
In their sustainability report, PETsMART® report on the ways they are trying to reduce their carbon footprint. Any opportunity to remove items from their waste stream reduces the number of hauls required from their stores and diverts unnecessary waste from landfills and reduces cost. Hardgoods include products such as beds, crates, leashes, bowls and other non-consumable products (Failla, 2012, p. 5). In 2011, PETsMART® began to test a Hardgoods Donation program, which reduces their environmental impact by diverting waste from landfills and benefits their non-profit animal welfare partners (Failla, 2012, p. 5). They rolled out the entire program to all stores in 2012, donating over 1 million items (Failla, 2012, p. 5).
PETsMART® is reducing the amount of waste in their store remodels by finding innovative vendors to recycle new products, like old floor tiles. In their first year of construction recycling, they diverted 11% of their waste (Benefits-of-Recycling, 2015, p. 4). PETsMART® responded to 8 new plastic bag regulations, providing communities like Austin, Texas, recycled-content paper bags and an enhanced selection of reusable bags (Benefits-of-Recycling, 2015, p. 4). They recycled over 1,800 lbs of plastic bags from the front of their stores (Benefits-of-Recycling, 2015, p. 4). PETsMART® recycled over 647 trees worth of paper last year (Benefits-of-Recycling, 2015, p. 4). In 2010, PETsMART® began to look at alternative ways to control waste when updating store shelving. In 2012 alone, they saved 4,000 shelves from the landfill and put them back to work in their stores (Benefits-of-Recycling, 2015, p. 4). PETsMART® recycled over 86.6 tons of electronic equipment, up 19% over 2011 (Benefits-of-Recycling, 2015, p. 4).
