Cartoons Take Children Captive
Media refers to teleision, radio, newspeper, magazines and movies as means of communications. Both the gathering and sending of information requires that choises be made, what to select, what to use, what to highligh and how to "tell" the story. The outcome ,the product of these choises is than passed on to an audience. The audience is given a version of reality, which is consructed and ready. The most important part of the audience is formed by children: especially children who watch cartoons.Cartoons are not the reflection of real life. In contrast it is an imaginary life. The problem consists in this points because of the fact that not all cartoons are expected to be true in the sense that they really happened, but clearly some are expected to be accurate descriptions of actual events. This consist lots of negative effects especially for children. In many country the positive and negative effects of cartoons are discussed. It is certain that children influence from them but the most important thing is that how they are influenced. The condition of influence can not be same both an adult and a child. A child always open to learn. Many research show that deviant behaviour are learned in the early age. Cartoons are representing deviance, it produces deviance although there ar e for chilldren.
Deviance can appear in front of us in many ways like losing the creativity and the ability of thinking. The amount of time that children spend watching television especially cartoons is very interesting because like 4 hours a day, 28 hours a week, by the time they graduated from high school children spend more time watching television than any other activity except sleeping. In our country the influence from television is higher than others because of the fact that in our country the ability of reading and thinking is not prevalent. In other words, children become passive by watching cartoons. While children watch the cartoons they don't use their ability of thinking . In contrast , they accept everything that is presented in cartoons.Exactly like this, they start to lose their ability of thinking and creativity in the early age. So their development are harmed. A study which was published in the medical journal "Pediatrics" and was done by Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center of Seattle, Washington proved that " children who watch three to four hours of television daily had a 30 to 40 percent greater risc of developping attention deficit disorder than children who did not watch television"
When the relation between media and child is evaluated, it is argue that violance is the most important thing. It can not be said that cartoons are the only source of violance for a child. However, cartoons have an encouraging component on violance. In cartoons, violance is presented under the name of entertainment. If a cartoon does not entertain children are not going to watch it. When the negative effects of the cartoons are evaluated according to groups of children, most of them prefer to watch vviolant cartoons except a group of child who are from immigrant groups. This children prefer to watch TV programmes which consist some information about their new culture. On the other hand, children who are emotionally disturbed and children who are abused by their parents mostly prefer watching violance cartoons. Therefore, it is not too correct to say absolute opinion about the violance of cartoons. Because Ñt can not be found violance in cartoons directly. In contrast, it is too sly. Chosing indirect ways is more dangerous than direct ways sometimes. When violance is presented directly , it is mostly understood that it is a bad thing, on the other hand, in the indirect ways it is too difficult to distinguish the bad from good because the bad thing is presented under the name of entertainment. Most studies hove no found any direct effect of cartoon violance on children's aggression
, but one study particularly hasfocused that cartoons make children more violent and more aggressive
:
"Five-year-old ted wakes up early on Saturday morning and watches Batman and Superman cartoons for hours. Little do his parents know what these programs are doing to Ted's behaviour.
Research shows that children who watch aggressive
programming, such as Batman and Superman, are more likely to get into fights, play rough and break toys"
Children think that it is a normal thing in their life to watch violent cartoons which increase their agresivness. Children who are exposed to cartoons violance use this violance in the real life. Many studies have proved that children imitate the behaviour (especially aggressive
and rewarded behaviour) they watch on cartoons. Also they think that violance is the best way to solve the problems. Cartoons which show the characters who commit crimes and who don't receive punishement because of their offense constitute very bad example. It teaches childern that is fine to commit a crime because there won't be punished. Therefore children will think that if they do the same thing as the character from the cartoons who commit the crime they will be a hero. For example, children who watch Superman and Batman a lot learn the aggressive
behaviour and imitate its. They choose violent ways like fighting, breaking toys to solve the confusion. So they start to confuse reality and fantasy.
Related to previous issue, the risk of children's safety increase very rapidly. Most of the cartoons include character which jumps, land without being harmed, smoke and drink alcohol. These are not related directly violance but these types of cartoons inflÑence childern in negative ways because of the fact that children want to behave like them. Also cartoons contain lots of things which are wanted to imitate by children like drinking alcohol. In Looney Tunes , there is two character which are Bugs Bunny and Emler Fudd: " it always seems to be rabbit hunting season and Emler Fudd can never seem to shoot that 'dong ol' rabbit. When he tries ,gun to aim of Elmer or plug it up with some kind of object.
