Crime Data Comparison

The two metropolitan areas that I have selected are Detroit, MI and Minneapolis, MN. In today's society, there are a lot of different crimes which consist of rape, thefts, burglary and even murder. Within this paper I will show the different percentage of murder within both of the metropolitan areas. I will also report which area had more reported murder, and also was there in any change over time with the areas. Also, what factors may explain the differences in the rates within the two metropolitan areas.

According to the 2011 census the population for Detroit, MI is 706.585 people. This in time has probable changed. With this being a very large city I can visualize the crime rates for this city. In two thousand and eleven Detroit's homicide was at seventy-six percent and as of April 2012 the homicide is at eighty-three percent. Which this does look good when compared to two thousand and nine when it was at ninety-six percent and in two thousand ten drop to seventy-three percent again. You can see that that throughout the years the homicide rates was up and down, within a large city as Detroit, MI. In two thousand and eleven Detroit had a total of five thousand police officers to protect the citizens and the streets of this city. But as time went on with all the retirements, resignations, even with the downsizing, the number of local law enforcements dropped very dramatically on an average of about of two thousand officers (Shelton, 2008). This did lead this big city to a potential mayhem. If you take a city with a large population and then losing almost half of the law enforcements this could be a major factor of the violence in Detroit (The Neighborhood Scout, 2009).

Minneapolis, MN is known for the "City of Lakes" and the "Mill City". According to the two thousand and twelve censuses the population of Minneapolis is 387.753 people. Minneapolis is the 48th largest in the United States. In two thousand and ten Minneapolis had twenty one murders that year, which the homicide rates for two thousand and ten was higher than two thousand and nine which only had nineteen murders. The murder rates in Minneapolis stayed constant for several years. However, within those times you may notice that seem a little under control. But what was actually happening was the communities group and local churches was reaching out the young teens and making plans for rallies to end the violence. This in time reduced their homicide rates.

Here you will see the difference in the crimes rates between the two metropolitan areas that I have selected. Minneapolis is 28.3 percent less dangerous to live in than Detroit which is 39.3 percent more dangerous to live in. However, each area has an increase and a decreased within their city. For Minneapolis you are 40.8 percent less likely to get robbed where Detroit you are 68.8 percent likely to get robbed, in Minneapolis you are 82.8 percent to be murdered where in Detroit is higher it is 481.1 percent likely. That is a big difference within the percentages of these two areas. Also Minneapolis is 71.1 percent that you are likely to have your car stolen where Detroit is 246.2 percent. Below you will see a chart of the differences in crime rates for both metropolitan areas.

Crime Totals

Minneapolis: 5943.0 which is down 28.2%

Detroit: 8281.0 which is up 39.3%

Violent Crimes

Minneapolis: 965.4 down 54.8 %

Detroit: 2137.4 up 121.4%

Property Crimes

Minneapolis: 4977.5 down 19.0%

Detroit: 6143.5 up 23.4%

If you notice the differences in these types of crimes, it seems that Minneapolis was
