Defence is one of Australia’s significant Regional and Global Links.Defence has many advantages to Australia as well as other countries such as protection and peace within the Asia-Pacific region.However, it does also have disadvantages to a certain extent such as the increased threat of terrorism and the cost.

Defence is immensely beneficial to Australia as they protect the country.They defend Australia in general as well as national interests.For example, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) protect Australia’s coast and oceans.They are liable for detecting, intercepting and deterring illegal fishing vessels or those carrying asylum-seekers, and enforcing fisheries laws and Australia’s sovereign rights in the southern oceans.RAN also helps other countries such as Iraq and East Timor.Using transport such as Therefore, Defence is a critical regional and global link because they protect Australia as well as other countries.

In addition, defence provides a substantial amount of jobs in Australia.Defence consists of many departments such as Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force.Thus, defence is one of the biggest employers in Australia.According to the Parliament of Australia, there was a total of 56,395 people working in defence in 2014 with an estimated 59,377 to be working in defence in 2016-2017.There is already an abundant amount of employees working in defence for Australia and evidently, this number will continue to grow in the future providing jobs for those interested.Therefore, defence is an vital aspect for the country because it allocates numerous Australian with jobs.

On the other hand, Defence in Australia also increases threat of terrorism.Terrorist attacks are becoming a serious issue around the world and has “... increased by 35 per cent from 2013 to 2014.” according to the 2016 Defence White Paper.Australia is very strict in protecting its border, thus, when asylum
