The Republicans Vs. Democrats

Choosing a political party is something I have always gone back and forth on. I agree with several issues on the Republican side but I also agree with several issues on the Democratic side. Having my mom being a Republican, and my dad a Democrat doesn't help me much when it comes to deciding. Through doing research in this class and better understanding the different views from both parties, as well as several others, I have found that I lean more towards the Republican side.

One issue that I have a strong opinion on is abortion. In my mind abortion is completely and utterly wrong. I do believe though that in some cases such as rape or incest, that abortion would probably be the best choice. A Republicans view on abortion is that society should do more to promote abstinence so abortion isn't even something to be considered. I completely agree with this. Today there are way too many kids interacting in intercourse because they think "it's cool," or the "thing" to do. I think that abstinence needs to start being taught at a younger age and kids need to be taught that it is okay not to have sex. Republicans also would say that there is always the option of adoption. I don't agree with this completely because in a case such as rape I don't believe that the victim should have to carry a baby of rape for nine months. I believe that, that would just add more trauma for that individual. A Democrats view on the abortion issue is that a woman has the right to choose what she does with her body and baby. I disagree with this idea greatly. If a woman goes out and gets herself pregnant because she decided to not make a wise choice, I don't think she should be able to get rid of her baby. It was her mistake, not the child's. If someone sees no consequences to their actions then they may just continue to repeat them. I do not believe it is a woman's choice or right to kill one of her own.

The next issue that I feel strongly on is gay rights. I believe that being a citizen of the United States means that every individual has the right to live their life the way they choose just as long as it does not harm others in the process. I believe that gays are allowed just as many rights as everyone else. People shouldn't judge and discriminate others when they themselves have flaws too. I do think that gays should be allowed to marry. Why shouldn't they be able to marry the one they love? Everyone else has that right. I do believe though that they should not have all of the privileges of that of a straight married couple. The one right that I strongly do not think they should have is the right to adopt kids, or go through the process of artificial insemination. Even though they are completely capable of loving and carrying for a child, I don't think it's right. I believe that it would only confuse the child as he or she got older and even cause embarrassment later. The child themselves would think that being homosexual is okay, and in our society we still have many people today that disagree with it. Democrats believe that gays should be entitled all of the same rights as everyone else. They also believe that there should be no federal gay marriage ban and that it should be chosen by the state. I agree with this last statement, I think that each individual state should vote whether or not too allow gays too marry. If not passed they should be able to go else where to marry if they would like.

The war in Iraq is something that most of us hear about almost everyday, either on the news or from other people. Hearing so much information about it and so many points of views makes it a difficult issue for me to decide on. There are so many arguments the support and discourage the Republican and Democratic point of views. Many Democrats say that the war did nothing but distract us from our main goal which was to stop Al-Qaida , find Osama bin Laden, and fight the war on terrorism. Although, yes Saddam Hussein was someone who needed to be stopped he was not the person who murdered over three thousand Americans on 9-11. Many Democrats also believe that the war was started with false intentions, and that it was conducted horribly, that he jumped into the war without a plan. It is also thought that we are fighting a lost cause that the only thing that we are doing is sacrificing our own soldiers. For all of the points made by the democratic side there are just as many convincing one on the Republican side. As for the war being a distraction from the war on terrorism many would argue that it isn't, its simply a step forward. It is said that going over to Iraq we had the intention of searching for and finding weapons of mass destruction. It turns out that there wasn't any, we were though by many to have failed. Although in reality we did find a something powerful enough to cause mass destruction. We found Saddam Hussein who was responsible for killing large amount of his people. Graves, some containing as many as five thousand people were found, they were all people who have been killed by him and his government. Many Republicans also believe that we are helping Iraq
