There’s a lot one can learn about ability from this chapter, for example I know people are born with disabilities, with issues that they have no control over. What, I took from reading this chapter is how much individuals with disabilities hide away from letting people know that there is something wrong with them with fear of being judged, looked differently, and treated differently. Let’s be honest no one wants to be seen as being different from their pairs nor do they want to be defined by it. From my understand, the way society portrayed those with disabilities as weak, perceived as people who can’t do things for themselves. Which is an interesting respond since I feel that everyone is flawed, no one is perfect and that what makes us great. It's not a pleasant feel to be patronized for something you have no control over. The statement that struck me while reading the chapter has to be what Antoine said, “People judge me for what I can’t do inside of what I can do” (Pg.137). We as an individual should embrace all they can do instead of focusing on what they aren’t able to. For example, I have a cousin who has Asperger’s Syndrome and every time he would visit for Thanksgiving one minute he would be bouncing off the wall and another he would be highly upset over the little thing. I used to be uninformed on that issue and just thought he was weird, but once, I learn more about what is wrong with him, it made me understand him. Therefore instead of being upset with him, it’s better to level with him and let him know that we are here for him.
