Distance Learning II
Giving constructive criticism to a friend was easier for me in comparison to giving feedback to a long distance classmate for the following reasons.
A face to face communication gives you the ability to adjust your response in real time without the fear of being misunderstood. Some of us don’t take criticism lightly and reading by emotions one can adjust to avoid an escalation.
However long distance feedback is frustrating, especially if there are too many unanswered questions. Issues are not addressed in real time and fear of being misunderstood is great without the ability to explain oneself. I believe ten people can read a passage and come up with ten different views and that’s why I believe long distance feedback can be catastrophic.
First, I started by pointing his negatives but he thought I was trying to paint him as irresponsible. When I realized that his attitude was going south, I was quick to change my approach and managed to resolve the issue by pointing out how a credit card can track his spending.
Had I not been face to face with him, I think he was going to dismiss me as someone with a negative attitude. He had to physically see how sincere I was and that my intentions were noble and aimed at resolving the issue at hand.
Giving feedback in long distance learning environment is beneficial because people are willing and ready to learn but the response is not real time. This affects the ability to respond to questions if they are any. I assume constructive criticisms are a two way communication and can be frustrating for someone who has genuine concerns and need their issues or concerns resolved in time.
