Promoting ethnic diversity in the workplace is an issue that is facing many companies regardless of how small or large it may be. In today's world where corporations are merging and relocating overseas, diversity is very crucial to a company's survival. A working environment that is ethnically diverse gives employees an opportunity to work with all kinds of people, and learn to appreciate different cultures, customs, and traditions. Promoting ethnic diversity is not an easy task, but it can be achieved with proper Commitment, Recruitment, and Communication.
A company must commit to the cause of promoting diversity, not just talk about it. One way management can commit is by providing training to the employees on how to relate and communicate better with coworkers who are of ethnic background.
In order to recruit employees of diverse ethnic backgrounds, companies need to encourage minority applicants. This can be achieved by placing want ads that are specifically aimed toward jobseekers of minority backgrounds. Companies can also take part in job fairs and promote work-study programs that are aimed towards minorities.
Constant communication is needed by management of corporations to inform employees of new policies and procedures. Management also needs to make employees aware of certain comments and attitudes that might come across as racist or as a way of labeling ethnic employees. Companies may save having work related issues and even costly lawsuits by simply advising employees to be more selective of their words and behaviors.
By applying these three elements in the workplace, and truly committing to them, companies can have a diverse workplace where different points of view are appreciated and where employees not only respect, but also admire different cultures and customs
