Harley-Davidson and a Code of Conduct

When I was sixteen years old, my dad let me take his 1972 XR-750 Sportster for a cruise around the block. It was one of the most exciting things I have ever done in my life. I was terrified by the movement without the security, and I was thrilled by it at the same time. It was like riding a roller coaster without a safety harness. At that moment. I fell in love with motorcycles, and with the name Harley-Davidson.

Harley-Davidson is an American Icon. The name itself suggests a sense of class and style with a tough and rugged twist. To own a Harley is to separate yourself from the average, a sort of status symbol or lifestyle. Because of this, and the ride I took on my dad's bike, are some of the many reasons I can't wait to own one. But one of the biggest reasons that I have recently come across was Everyday Values: The Harley-Davidson Code Of Business Conduct.

After discussing ethics and corporate responsibility in class, I started to judge my ethics and responsibility as a consumer. I should be more thorough in my decisions when making purchases. When I read The Harley-Davidson Code Of Business Conduct, I knew that when I bought a Harley, I would also be buying and Ethical Product.

The Harley-Davidson Code Of Business Conduct is an outline for all its employees and their business behavior. It includes the Company's Values: "Tell the truth, Be fair, Keep your promises, Respect the individual, and Encourage intellectual curiosity" (Code 4), and how they are implemented into the business decision making process with such questions as

Is my action consistent with the Harley-Davidson Values? Is my action consistent with approved Company policies or practices? Does my action conform to the spirit of this Code of Business Conduct and comply with the law? Could my action be perceived as improper? (Code 5).
