Harley-Davidson, Inc. (HDI), established in 1903 by William Harley and Arthur Davidson, specializes in the manufacturing and marketing of motorcycles and related products and accessories. The firm also operates a financial unit, Harley-Davidson Financial Services, offering a complete package of convenient financial services that make owning a Harley easy. These services include credit, insurance, protection options, extended service plans, and the Harley Davidson Visa card.
The motorcycles segment of the firm includes Harley-Davidson Motor Company and its subsidiary group of companies doing business as Buell Motorcycle Company. The Motor Company designs, manufactures and sells heavyweight touring, custom and performance motorcycles as well as a complete line of motorcycle parts, accessories and general merchandise. . The majority of the Harley-Davidson-branded motorcycle products emphasize traditional styling, design simplicity, durability and ease of service. Harley-Davidson currently manufactures five families of motorcycles: Sportster, Dyna Glide, Softail, Touring and VRSC. The line combines performance with the style of a custom motorcycle. Buell motorcycle products emphasize innovative design, responsive handling and overall performance. Buell, the subsidiary, has six models, including five heavyweight models in the XB family, and the Blast. Harley-Davidson does a significant amount of business abroad, with its international segment occupying approximately 18% of the net revenue of the Motorcycles segment.
The third subsidiary of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company is the Harley-Davidson Dealer Systems. This group offers proprietary software to licensed Harley-Davidson dealerships. Harley-Davidson Dealership Systems are the makers of a software and hardware package used by a sizable chunk of Harley-Davidson dealers.
