Defensive driving is immensely important while operating a vehicle. Practicing defensive driving will greatly lessen one's chance of being involved in an accident. In addition to practicing defensive driving, the driver must also use good judgment, avoid carelessness, and gain experience behind the wheel. In order to practice defensive driving, the driver must, first and foremost, obey the law! This includes: wearing one's seatbelt; not drinking and driving; and driving the designated speed. These laws were, in fact, created for a reason - the reason being; the driver's safety. If one had to stop the car suddenly to avoid an obstruction or to react to the weather, maintaining a controlled speed is crucial. In order to drive defensively, one must always assume that obstacles will occur and therefore, must drive at an appropriate speed.

The driver also must be fully attentive to the road at all times. This is a huge aspect of defensive driving. If something unexpected were to happen, the driver must be able to react quickly and suitably. If the driver were to be distracted by other passengers, cell phones, radios, food, etc, he/she would not be able to react correctly to an unpredicted occurrence. Accidents will be avoided if the driver practices defensive driving and pays attention!

Also, as a defensive driver, one must always look for escape routes. The driver must always be prepared to save himself and get out of harm's way. If an approaching vehicle is defying the law and in one's path of travel, one must unconsciously be able to find an area to pull off or stop. A method that will keep the driver alert is assuming that an approaching vehicle will always make stupid, reckless decisions that will endanger ones' life. If one believes this, one will always be ready to find the appropriate escape route.

The driver must also be cautious in all areas. This includes cities, at intersections or stop signs, on expressways, in parking lots, and in bad weather. In city traffic, the driver must keep his/her eyes on parked cars and pedestrians, and on lane changes, driveways, and signs. At intersections and stop signs, the driver must assume that the perpendicular flow of traffic will not stop and thus, must still look both ways and
