Many people in society read books. During reading they begin to perceive new truths and realize new ideals from them. These books, that people enjoy, leave a long and lasting impression on them and through this they are more likely to recommend their favourite book on their favourite topic to others they know. When we read books they become important guidebooks for our lives. The reason is that the books we chose to read enlighten and teach us essential things that bring understanding and enjoyment to our lives. However, not all books are liked by everyone. A good story has at its core something special, such as it’s theme or plot and the use of carefully chosen details. These elements are the main indispensable features of a good story, as these central characteristics must by coordinated to create a pleasurable reading experience loved by many.

The first aspect of a good story is a condensed and tight plot. To engage the reader in the story, the main characters must be taking part in a believable and interesting situation. If a story were not interesting, people would not read it and they might feel hostile towards the writing. It is essential that a good story bring the characters through a sudden intersection with the usual and extraordinary. It can also expand the readers’ viewpoint by experiencing something that they themselves have never experienced. For example the story ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s, portrays the decline into mental illness of the main character. This can provoke the readers interest and allows the reader to experience something that they themselves may not have experienced.

The second aspect of a good story is the use of carefully chosen details. If the story was vague on details it would cause the readers to be easily distracted and bored. They would also quickly forget the story no matter how interesting the plot or characters are. A good use of details will help the reader to visualize
