Pinterest is a web and mobile application company that allows it’s users to share content such as photos, videos and other media content on a common platform. Registration is required for users. Pinterest allows their users to sign up using Facebook and Twitter accounts. A user can upload content onto his/her personalized media platform known as a ‘pinboard'. Each media content is stored on Pinterest in the form of ‘pins’. Users that find a certain pin interesting can add it to their pinboard. Content from third party websites can also be added to inboards using the pin it option. Pinterest also provides promotional pages to businesses.
Information lifecycle flow :
Pinterest generates it’s information in different types of ways :
• User information such as profile photo, name, email address, pins, location is obtained when a user registers with pinterest. If purchases are made, payment information is also provided to pinterest.
• Pinterest does not create it’s own content, but creates a compilation of content acquired from all over the web.
• Pinterest also utilizes cookies to collect information on user’s interests and the web pages visit-ed with Pinterest features on it using log data.
• Pinterest also acquires information about user activities from it’s advertiser and partners, typi-cally websites that run ads to improve on the content within these ads.
• Pinterest doesn’t use just thumbnails, rather it uses the actual copies of the images.
• The Amazon S3 cloud storage is used by Pinterest along with data deduplication to avoid in-crease in size due to duplicates.
• Security is provided in storage where the user has an option to keep the pins secret.
