As a new chief judge the first issue must be with the judges themselves. Each of the judges must be aware that there are no favorites and everyone will be held accountable for their actions even the chief judge. The judges must be aware that they control the morale within the courthouse and if their actions deter a good working environment or keep the courthouse from functioning in a positive manner then the problem will be transferred from the courthouse. The judges must be aware that they will at times disagree with one another but that any disagreement cannot be allowed outside of their chambers. The employees in the courthouse cannot be aware of any disagreements and should have the expectations that the judges are working together and are always in agreement. The employees look at the judges for guidance and at this time there is no guidance being provided to the employees.
The employees need to feel trusted and appreciated. They must be able to voice their opinions whether negative or positive. There should be a monthly employee meeting to address concerns or comments that are from the general membership. The employees need to also be trained on employee treatment and understand that gossip will no longer be tolerated within the organization. There will be punishment for anyone violating the policy, which could include up to termination. A distinct chain of command must be initiated so that the employees know who is in the chain of command in case there are problems that need to be addressed. The employees need to be notified that they will be evaluated on productivity, employee treatment, and ability to provide customer service. Promotions and other items will be determined based upon their work performance. The employees would also be transferred throughout the courthouse in order to start somewhat fresh.
